We pack into the hospital ambulance to head to Birip market. Close quarters, especially when poor Pricilla was suffering from food poisoning.
And yet, there are plenty of smiles to go around, as demonstrated by my friend Win Kinobe (yes, kind of like Obiwan Kinobe;-)
As we pass various markets, we hand out fliers and Agnes speaks to the people about HIV and the VCT clinic in Mambis.
Lot of people gather around to hear.
When we get to Birip, they are collecting money for a compensation.Someone from their community injured someone from another community so ...
they have to pay compensation. Once the compensation is done, Elizha starts to speak to the crowds about HIV.
We begin a drama where two friends go to the market. (please excuse the black and whites. My camera kind of quirked out because of too much sunlight)
There they meet a businessman who takes interest in them both.
He eventually pays both of them to sleep with him.
Months later one of the girls begins feeling ill, and is tested for HIV. She receives counseling, ART medications, & learns to live positively.
She goes and tells her friend about what she has experienced and encourages her to also be tested, but the friend refuses.
Then her friend begins to get sick.
She goes to visit but it is too late.
The girl grows sicker and sicker.
Eventually she dies and her friends mourn.
Elizha talks about the importance of looking out for your body, being tested early, and caring for your body if you are HIV positive.
The crowds pay close attention, even though it’s a hot sunny day.
They gather from near and far.
Then it’s time to hop back on the ambulance and head home. Tired, but happy.
